Christian Eriksen has confirmed that he hopes leave Manchester United at the end of the season, with his contract at Old Trafford now in his last months.
Eriksen joined United As a free agent in the summer of 2022, after having spent the first half of this year doing a remarkable professional comeback with Brentford after a almost fatal cardiac arrest on the 2020 euro.
The legend of Denmark was initially a key player, but has played a more Frange role in the last 18 months, mainly due to a combination of injuries and the age when he hit the end of his career.
As a free agency, Eriksen has talked with Danish publication Tips in the magazine about what comes next.
“My intention is not to stay in England,” said the 33-year-old.
“This situation is different from when I was a free agent after my cardiac arrest. Then it was to show that I could still play. Now, it’s just to wait for the right opportunity and not to make hasty decisions. If something feels good, I will take it.”
Eriksen confirmed that no “firm decisions” have been made on where I could play in 2025/26: “Races do not always follow an established plan. I do not have a list of things I have to do; I will see what comes and what is better for me and my family.”
A possible return to Ajax, the club where Eriksen promoted as a teenager, has not been ruled out and maintains its options as open as possible, within some key parameters.
Apart from preferred to leave England, the midfielder is also resistant to the major league football in the United States, reasoning, “We will not travel that far.” This could also rule out the Pro -Saudi Leagueor in fact any other opportunity outside of Europe.
Eriksen also does not like to go home in Denmark, saying that he is “too soon” and that he has “good years abroad”, at least suggesting that he could become an option in the coming years.
“In Denmark, players often focus on family and end their careers in this way, but I still don’t feel like I’m there,” he said. “It’s just football and where my career is now. Honestly, I’ve spent more time abroad than in Denmark during my career, so I would almost move home to move to a new country. But we are not yet there.
“Often, moving home is a practical choice more than football. Love for the game remains the same, no matter where you play. But for me, I still have the ambition to compete at the highest level, be part of the national team and play for the best. So I don’t feel time to go home.”
