Manchester United go on to hire Ruben Amorim as the manager appears to have put them in a stronger position to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand.
The Denmark international has a £67m release clause in his contract at Sporting, and it looks like Man Utd may now have the edge over rivals Man City in the race for his signature due to the presence of his former coach Amorim, according to a report from give me sport.
“EVERYTHING for sale”: Ruben Amorim is ready to completely renew the Man United squad!
The report explains that Hjulmand was already a player on United’s radar before signing Amorim, while Hugo Viana, who moves from Sporting to become City manager next season, could also be a key factor in account
Still, for now it looks like the Red Devils might have a slight edge here, with Hjulmand perhaps understandably keen to work with Amorim again after their success together in Lisbon.
The transfer of Morten Hjulmand seems necessary for both United and City
It’s clear that both United and City have needs in midfield at the moment, with Hjulmand looking like he would surely be good enough to make a positive impact.
The 25-year-old is an excellent all-rounder in the middle of the park, and could be what Pep Guardiola’s team is missing at the moment due to Rodri’s injury.
That could mean something to consider in January as United also need better options in midfield as Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are aging and past their prime.
MUFC also have potential concerns over summer signing Manuel Ugarte, who has yet to live up to expectations since joining the club from Paris Saint-Germain.
Hjulmand could be a better fit for what Amorim is trying to build at Old Trafford, but the report from Give Me Sport suggests he may need to trigger his £67m release clause in order for talks to progress.
