Mallorca cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio Mallorca Son Moix, boosted by a dominant first-half display from Vedat Muriqi.
Mallorca entered this La Liga clash in 16th place, eager to distance themselves from the relegation zone. Rayo Vallecano have reached 13th place with hopes of climbing higher, but have struggled to find their rhythm against a disciplined home team.
The game started with tactical tension, but the visitors fought back with discipline early on. N. Mendy received a yellow card in the 23rd minute, quickly followed by F. Lejeune in the 32nd minute as the pressure mounted.
The tie was broken in the 36th minute when Vedat Muriqi found the net. His accuracy gave the hosts a vital lead as the crowd erupted in celebration.
Muriqi wasn’t done there as he doubled the lead just four minutes later. In the 40th minute, he struck again to put Mallorca completely in front before the break.
Rayo Vallecano needed a tactical change at the break to recover. They held onto the ball more, but failed to convert this possession into important opportunities.
The visitors’ frustration grew at the start of the second half. R. Nteka was booked in the 53rd minute, signaling a difficult afternoon for the visiting team.
Mallorca remained calm and added a third goal in the 65th minute. J. Virgili scored to effectively end the game as a competitive game.
A. Ratiu was cautioned by the visitors in the same 65th minute. Despite making substitutions, Rayo Vallecano could not break Mallorca’s resolute defence.
The hosts finished with 12 shots, including four on target, while generating an Expected Goals (xG) figure of 1.68. Rayo Vallecano managed 14 shots but only two hit the target, showing a lack of cutting edge.
The visitors finished with 55 percent possession, but lacked the urgency to trouble goalkeeper Leo Román. Mallorca defended well to secure a clean sheet.
This result provides a massive boost to Mallorca in its fight for safety. They now look forward with renewed confidence, while Rayo Vallecano must regroup after a disappointing defensive performance.
