Luke Nuttall. “I want my father to be proud”



Luke Nathalie motivated to succeed in his second Paralympic Games by memory of his late father John

Luke Nuttall regularly feels like he’s being watched. However, there is nothing scary or disturbing about the sensation. In fact, just the opposite.

When the going gets tough, the 22-year-old can’t help but think about his late father, former Olympic distance runner and coach John Nuttall. who died suddenly at the end of last year.

Married to Liz McColgan and also the father of British international distance runner Hannah Nuttall, John’s death was a huge blow to the athletics community and his family in particular. Luke isn’t going to pretend it hasn’t left a big hole in his life, but a big smile spreads across his face as he describes the role his father now plays every day.

“If there are sessions that get difficult or any runs that I don’t want to do, it’s like; . “Given the belief that he had in both me and Hannah, I just feel like that gives me extra motivation to make him proud.

“If you’re crushing the winter session…you can’t give up because he’s now watching all your sessions from there. I was absolutely devastated because he meant so much to all of us, but there was also the other side where I was able to use him as a great motivation for me.”
