One of Liverpool’s rising stars Luke Chambers has had his loan spell at Wigan Athletic cut short after suffering a devastating back injury.
The 20-year-old left-back faces a sustained spell on the sidelines and that is not good news for Latics, the Reds or England, given that Chambers has been forced out of the last few games under -20 with the selection.
When it comes to back problems, it’s clear why no risks can be taken, and that means the immediate future doesn’t look all that bright for the defender.
Luke Chambers out for ‘months’ after major injury blow
“Luke has a back injury and his prognosis isn’t too good,” Wigan boss Shaun Maloney noted in quotes obtained by Wigan today.
“We got that news yesterday (Tuesday), he’s going to be out for a fair amount of time. You won’t see him back on the field for a long time.
“(…) It’s not weeks, months will pass, the new year will surely come.

“He won’t need an operation but he will be back in Liverpool tomorrow (Wednesday), they will take care of his rehabilitation. The specialists will get involved and take care of that… it’s a real shame for him.”
It’s possible that this exact scenario was always in the cards for Chambers, though, as Maloney also pointed out; “I think there’s a bit of history behind it, over the last two or three years … it’s not something that happened or an impact injury.”
It’s the hardest blow, especially when you consider Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, a world-renowned full-back, labeled the youngster “unbelievable” during a Europa League performance last season (TNT Sports).
All he can do now is work hard and hope he can get back to his previous level, although it’s clear it’s going to be a long, hard road ahead.
