Luka Modric breaks the famous record of Real Madrid in the victory of Celta de Vigo

Luka Modric became the oldest player in Real Madrid’s history when he came off the bench in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Celta Vigo.

The veteran midfielder came on shortly after the hour mark and needed just three minutes to make an impact, setting up what turned out to be Vinicius Junior’s winning goal.

At 39 years and 40 days, Modric became the oldest player to even represent Madrid, breaking the record of the legendary Ferenc Puskas.

Modric will continue to break his own record throughout the season. His contract expires in June, three months before he turns 40.

“When he starts, when he comes off the bench… he always helps us,” coach Carlo Ancelotti said after the game. “He came in at a difficult moment in the game and changed the game. It is a pleasure to coach him as a player and as a person.

“There is not much to add. He is a fantastic footballer and still is. An extraordinary professional. A quiet man, but with character. Real Madrid have been lucky to have this player.”

Reports suggest Modric will leave Madrid at the end of the season, although the Croatia international remains a regular part of Ancelotti’s starting line-up. He has already started five times in the league this season, after 18 starts last year.
