Before the action begins on Saturday we are collecting our crew in place Championship Writers to place a bow in the early-weekly-conceptual action who did and lost, cutting with 36 holes. Let’s start with the painful things and then get up the lift to finish.
1, whose open championship MC hurt the most?
Gimme two players each.
James Colgan: Collin Morikawa. It was not so long ago that Morikawa reached Pebble Beach for AT&T Pro-AM as one of the much best players in the world; All that remained was to cross the line for a victory. Now he leaves it open after numerous velvet divisions, some tested moments and a big season that reached a T14 master. After the game Royal Portreush’s Opening 36 holes in the same group as Scottie Scheffler and loss with 17 strokes, the gap between him and the top of the game looks quite wide.
Sean Zak: Patrick reed. It may have been just a poor opportunity that he played his way to the Ryder Cup team, but the door was probably closed this week when he shot the first round. He has been hanging at a high level of 40-in-world this summer, which is very good. Just not just good enough to make the American Ryder Cup team.
Dylan Dothier: Cameron Smith It is the only golf player playing in all four diplomas this year and loses all four cuts. The fact that he only defeated a dozen or more players after a second round 78 made this MC particularly demoralizing. Smith won 2022 Open and finished 10 balls in three of the next five majority after that; These quarrel trips have begun to feel long ago.
Colgan: Patrick Cantlay. After stripping the international team a year ago in the presidents Cup, it seemed unbreakable that Cantlay would be everything other than a blockage for the US Ryder Cup team, as the golf calendar collapsed in August 2025. T36 in the lord.
To be clear, I still think that Cantlay is an easy choice for the Bethpage list given its match record, but the main season in a year Ryder Cup is about building a resume, and Cantlay certainly had better.
Zakth: Adam Scott. I wondered myself (On this website) If his performance at Oakmont could be one of his last true moments of claims in a major. I will hope it is not but you never know! Scott has played in 97 consecutive degrees and should do it 98 when he will remove it in Augusta in April. But he is not automatically qualified to play any of the others. He is currently out looking at FedEx Cup’s Play off, too. As a result, he is directed by portrait directly to Minneapolis for his first appearance ever in Open 3m.
alacrity: Brooks koepka. There is no doubt the man’s lecturer; Koepka is a five-time champion that is associated with Rory Mcilroy for most diplomas in the post-Tiger and Phil era. But he has just lost his third major cut of 2025 and has only one 25th Top Top last month at the US Open-in his last nine beginnings.
Another guy who deserves mention: Tom McKibbin. The 22-year-old Irish northern entered the week as a local favorite; At the moment he is the best player of this place after Rory Mcilroy. There is no question in McKibbin’s talent, but it will be interesting to see how successfully he can play his way in future diplomas; He is currently not compatible to qualify for any of the four in 2026.
2. In the good things, then: to whom did I say the most?
Two each – Colgan, you start again.
Colgan: Bryson dechambeau The cutting was especially important given the way the swelling of the portrait royal was unfolded. I would admit that I thought the older boy was out of him after an open round 78. He seemed to see most of the beginnings in the open championship on Thursday, which means outside the species. Then he went out on Friday and recorded a 65th Brillian and followed him on Saturday with another impressive 68. For the player on the field whose game appears less Optimized for these conditions, I am impressed by its severity.
Zakth: Justin Leonard. The 53-year-old had several certified slip In his step when I talked to him Thursday evening, fresh in his first round 70. After a second round 73 he made his first cut in a major since US Open 2014. I would be riding!
alacrity: Lee Westwood. The 52-year-old had not even played in a major since 2022, the summer he signed with Liv. The fact that he qualified and then did not just cut the cut, but played his way into strife? It was a reminder that this is a guy with five fourth conclusions at the event in the middle of his high -level pro -Golf decades.
Colgan: Matt Fitzpatrick. A move through the Ryder Cup ranking reveals how far Fitzy fell during the cuts of the last 18 months (he ranks 22nd before the portrait is signed, after Jorge Campillo and Jon Rahm, whose latter has not received Ryder Cup points for any of his livies). On Saturday, he will play Open in the latest pairing at Scottie Scheffler – a sign of where his golf is tending, and another part of the good news for Euro -Luke Donald captain.
Zakth: Justin Thomas. As the owner of one of the most confusing championship records, JT Kinda needed it. He had lost the cut in Quail Hollow and Oakmont and had only one Top-30 in the 13 main beginnings dating from his 2022 PGA victory. He will be happy for a few weekends in a big scene before becoming a massive part of the US Ryder Cup team.
alacrity: Jordan Spieth. Talk about a guy with many things that happen in the minute. Spieth lost six months after surgery, returned and played a million in a row, showed a very good form, withdrew from travelers with an injury, took some time of rest, became a father for the third time, and reached Northern Ireland for this week open. He is tapping only within the 50’s in the FedEx Cup, he is on the edge of the Ryder Cup conversation and even a 50th place result in Portrarian looks and feels much better than an MC.
