Liverpool star Curtis Jones has received a surprise call-up to the England squad for the Three Lions games in October, despite the midfielder spending most of the 2024/25 campaign on the sidelines.
The 23-year-old picked up a muscle injury at the start of the season and has started just two games for the Merseyside club as a result, which included Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in last weekend
Despite this, Lee Carsley has decided to make the surprise decision to call up Jones for England’s upcoming Nations League clashes against Greece and Finland, reports. The Daily Star.
The head of the Three Lions has seen his the original equipment deteriorates due to injuries with Kobbie Mainoo, Ezri Konsa and Morgan Gibbs-White retiring from international duty after last weekend’s round of Premier League fixtures.
Newcastle’s Tino Livramento has also been brought into the squad by the interim England manager and it remains to be seen if they can win their first England games.
Is Liverpool’s Curtis Jones call-up a surprise?
Given the amount of action Jones has had this season, his England call-up comes as a surprise; however, in the long term, Carsley will be looking to see if the 23-year-old can shine for the senior team as he did under the Three Lions interim boss at U21 level.
The midfielder played 20 games for England Under-21s, producing five goals and four assists. The Liverpool star was also a key part of Carsley’s squad that won the 2023 European Under-21 Championship, a tournament where Jones scored the winner in the final against Spain.
This is a huge opportunity for the Liverpool star and even if he doesn’t play a minute, being on the England pitch will do him the world of good going forward.
