Liverpool have signed teenage goalkeeper Kornel Misciur on his first professional contract, giving him the chance to prove he is worthy of a future first-team place.
Misciur turned 17 in April this year, having joined the club’s academy ranks from Hull City in 2023. That’s it. LiverpoolThe Premier League 2 starting goalkeeper having been promoted to the Under-21s this season even captained the side last time out against Manchester United.
The young capper has the same status for UEFA Youth League matches.
Misciur was born in England, specifically in Scarborough, to Polish parents in 2007, making him eligible to represent both national teams.
Already ahead of fellow academy goalkeepers Harvey Davies and Reece Trueman in the youth pecking order, his progress appears to be good and Liverpool’s senior goalkeeping department is set for a shake-up in the not too distant future.
Alisson is currently sidelined with a hamstring problemhis fourth absence from muscle-related injuries in just the last 11 months. It has brought uncertainty to the 32-year-old Brazilian’s long-term place at the club, particularly with a degree of preparation for the future having already taken place in the form of a previous £29m move for the Valencia goalkeeper and Georgia Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Caoimhin Kelleher has once again replaced Alisson during the latest absence. But now there is an acceptance Mamardashvili on the way in 2025 that the Republic of Ireland international will never be Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper.
Kelleher recently recognized that as he is given more of a chance to shine in Alisson’s absence, he has the potential to increase what Liverpool will expect from him in the transfer market. The Republic of Ireland international was resigned to leaving in the summer as his situation was “never going to change” and he was not “going to be happy sitting on the bench”, but a move never materialised.
Equally, however, he also insisted that there are worse things than staying “at a club like Liverpool”.
The Reds also have Vitezslav Jaros in the first-team squad this season. The Czech international, 23, was catapulted into the limelight earlier this month when he made his Liverpool debut as a 79th-minute substitute for the injured Alisson in a win against Crystal Palace, with Kelleher no longer available for that match due to illness
Jaros spent the second half of last season impressing on loan at Sturm Graz, earning him a call-up to Euro 2024. But it was his first game in English football in two years, since a loan spell at League Two at Stockport County which saw him lose his place to a minor injury and then fail to regain it.
