Liverpool have dealt a devastating blow to their hopes of signing a dream player

Liverpool have been dealt a blow to their hopes of signing Anthony Gordon after he was rumored to be close to agreeing a new contract.

Arne Slot got off to the perfect start as Liverpool’s new manager, producing three bounce-back wins that included a 3-0 demolition of Manchester United at Old Trafford.

But the Reds were dealt a huge blow on the road when they lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at Anfield in a game they dominated.

Liverpool created plenty of chances but, unusually, failed to show the composure in front of goal to make them count.

Although not a very pressing issue, the Reds have lacked a threat down the left flank, with Luis Diaz and Darwin Núñez putting in good performances, but they lack the consistency that Mohamed Salah has provided at the other end.

The Merseyside club have been heavily linked with a new left winger as they reportedly made several approaches to sign Gordon from Newcastle but were unable to lure him away from the Magpies.

If a deal for the 23-year-old was difficult to conjure up in the summer, it’s about to get a lot harder with reports from the Mail via the Expressclaiming that he will be given a new contract.

The report claims it would make him the top earner in St. James’ Park with the proposal offering him around £9 million a year.

With Federico Chiesa arriving at Anfield for a bargain price in the summer, he may dissuade Slot’s team from returning for Gordon based on his performances.
