Joel Roca’s spectacular stoppage-time equalizer saved a crucial point for Girona in a thrilling 1-1 draw against ten-man Levante at the Ciudad de Valencia Stadium.
Levante had been on the verge of a vital victory in their fight against relegation, despite playing more than 30 minutes with a numerical disadvantage.
Going into the match, Levante found themselves 19th in La Liga, in desperate need of points. Girona, 12th, wanted to consolidate its mid-table position and climb higher. The stage was set for a competitive match.
In the first half, Girona controlled possession, dictating the pace of the game. However, clear-cut chances were hard to come by for the visitors. Levante defended strongly, absorbing the pressure and looking for opportunities to counter.
The only notable incident of the first period came in the 26th minute. Girona’s H. Rincón received a yellow card for an elbow foul, highlighting the physical nature of the game.
At the break, the score remained goalless. Girona needed to find a way to convert their possession into goals. Levante needed more attacking threat if they hoped to get the three points.
The second half burst into action five minutes after the restart. Levante broke the deadlock in the 50th minute. Carlos Espà scored a well-marked goal, assisted by VÃctor GarcÃa, which moved the home crowd.
However, Levant’s leadership was precarious. Just nine minutes later, in the 59th minute, JA Olasagasti received a straight red card for a serious foul. Levant faced the difficult task of holding on with ten men.
Girona immediately increased the pressure, taking advantage of their numerical advantage. Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan became Levante’s hero, making four crucial saves to keep his side ahead. Substitutions such as Arnau MartÃnez and T. Lemar pushed Girona even further.
The tireless effort of the visitors finally paid off in the 90+4th minute. Substitute Joel Roca, who had only been on the pitch since the 54th minute, scored the equaliser. Alejandro Francés provided the assist, grabbing a point for Girona at the death.
Girona’s statistical dominance was evident, with 67% possession and 22 shots in total, with five on target. His expected goals (xG) stood at 2.08. Llevant, on the other hand, achieved 33% possession, 14 shots (four on goal) and an xG of 0.67.
This spectacular tie leaves Levante still very much rooted in the relegation zone, losing crucial points. Girona will see it as a point gained, but will regret not taking full advantage of playing against ten men for so long. The final goals and highlights were a blistering watch, and Girona will be delighted to find the back of the net, even if it was at the death.
