Caretaker England manager Lee Carsley was impressed with Anthony Gordon’s performance in the Three Lions’ 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.
Gordon, who endured a frustrating summer after making just one appearance for England Euro 2024 campaign in Germany, he came close to getting his name on the scoresheet as his side cruised to victory over Ireland.
The Newcastle United The winger was expected to join Liverpool this summer, before the Reds backed out of a deal involving Jarell Quansah. He has already made an impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign, registering one goal and three Premier League appearances.
Now, it seems Gordon has also impressed on the international stage, with boss Carsley highlighting his impact England’s first win in the UEFA Nations League.
“On a really dry sticky pitch it’s not ideal for dribblers but I thought Anthony (Gordon) was a real threat,” Carsley told reporters after the game. “He has maintained his form from last season and looks like a very dangerous player.
“I thought it was good in parts. You saw some of the things we tried to do. The guys have to take a lot of credit, all the credit. I think we showed we have some real talent and we can be very satisfied with the goal.
“I think you have to give credit to Ireland as well, they are very resilient, they closed the gaps and maybe our space got a bit wider (in the second half). It was a bit more difficult for us to get past them. but with at 2-0 we were quite comfortable.”
England will return to action on Tuesday when they face Finland at Wembley Stadium.
