Lazio secured a dramatic 2-1 Serie A win over Sassuolo, Adam MaruÅ¡ić’s stoppage-time goal securing all three points at the Stadio Olimpico.
Lazio came into this encounter in 11th place, desperate to find consistency after a run of mixed form, including a recent win but mostly draws and defeats. Sassuolo, in 9th, arrived with confidence, with a good run of four wins in their last five league games.
The match burst into life almost immediately. Lazio took the lead in the 2nd minute when Daniel Maldini showed quick instinct to slot the ball past the Sassuolo goalkeeper. This gave the home team a dream start in Rome.
Sassuolo, however, responded well in the first leg from behind. They pressed for an equalizer and found it in the 35th minute when Armand Laurienté expertly guided a shot into the net. Kristian Thorstvedt provided the assist, tying the score before the break.
The first half also saw a tactical substitution for Lazio, with Danilo Cataldi replacing Patric in the 38th minute. Sassuolo’s Luca Lipani was also booked for a foul, reflecting the growing intensity.
The teams entered the break tied at 1-1. Both managers likely used the interval to fine-tune strategies, knowing the next goal could be pivotal in this hotly contested affair.
The second half started with more changes. Sassuolo brought in Nemanja Matic, while Lazio brought in Alessio Romagnoli. The substitutions were meant to change the momentum and bring fresh legs to the midfield battles.
Sassuolo continued to rack up bookings, and Ulisses Garcia was shown a yellow card in the 58th minute. This showed their growing frustration as Lazio pressed for a second goal.
As the match entered its final phase, both teams made multiple substitutions in search of a winner. Lazio replaced goalscorer Maldini, while Sassuolo introduced attacking options such as M’Bala Nzola. The visitors also picked up two yellow cards at the end of Laurienté (86′) and Krystian Walukiewicz (88′).
Just when a draw seemed inevitable, Lazio found their hero. In the 90th+2nd minute, Adam Marušić scored a spectacular late winner, assisted by Matteo Cancellieri. His powerful strike marked a crucial victory for the Biancocelesti.
Lazio’s win was well deserved, with an expected goals (xG) of 2.59 compared to Sassuolo’s 0.67. They also recorded 13 shots in total with 5 on target, while Sassuolo managed 7 shots in total with 4 on target. Both teams shared 50% of the ball.
This thrilling comeback at the Estadio Olimpico sees Lazio climb the Serie A table. It also halts Sassuolo’s impressive run of recent form, significantly boosting Lazio’s hopes of a stronger league finish.
