Laura Muir awarded 2015 European Indoor 3000m bronze

The Briton was given a special presentation at the Scottish Short Course Cross-Course Championships after Russian athlete Elena Korobkina was banned for four years.
Laura Muir claimed her long-awaited 2015 European Indoor bronze medal at the Lindsays Short Course Championships in Kirkcaldy at the weekend.

It would be the Briton’s first international medal and would add to her impressive medal collection as Britain’s most successful indoor athlete.

Muir, then just 21 years old, narrowly missed out on the podium in the 3000m final in Prague, finishing fourth.

However, due to the disqualification of race winner Elena Korobkina, who was banned for doping offences, Muir’s performance was rewarded.

This means that the gold went to Sviatlana Kudzelich from Belarus, and the silver to Maureen Koster from the Netherlands.

Muir’s bronze medal takes her to an impressive 14 major medals at the Olympics, World Championships, European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

Scottish Athletics held a special presentation at its Short Course Championships to honor his achievement; a race he has previously won in 2021, 2017, 2016 and 2015.

Ian Beattie, Great Britain Athletics presented Muir with the bronze medal. He was also honored with his Eric Liddell Olympic/Paralympic Achievement Trophy from the Scottish Athletics Awards.

“It’s definitely a mixed bag and a strange feeling, but it’s nice to see and get the actual medal and have family and friends here in Kirkcaldy,” Laura told Scottish Athletics.

“Better late than never, I guess is the saying, but we’ve got to keep doing it.

“I’m lucky to still be a runner, but of course it could have meant a lot to my career at the time. I was 21 and didn’t win my first international medal.

“People need to be held accountable and hopefully bans and rewriting results act as a deterrent. We need to send a message that this is not acceptable.

“I want to thank European Athletics, Great Britain Athletics and Scottish Athletics for making this happen for me. Kirkcaldy felt like a good place for it and I have very fond memories of racing in this event as a junior athlete.

“The response from the people here today was so sweet. I wanted it to happen in Scotland and there were athletes here that I’ve come up against years ago and I loved seeing so many friendly faces.”

The event also featured strong performances from other Scottish athletes. The senior men’s race was won by Ben Potrikus of Inverclyde AC, finishing just ahead of Jamie Crowe of Central AC, who was last year’s winner.

Aidan Thompson, also competing for Central AC, secured bronze, helping his team to team gold in the team competition, with Carnethy HRC and Edinburgh University taking silver and bronze respectively.

In the senior women’s race, Nancy Scott of Edinburgh AC won gold, followed by Lynne McKenna (Shettleston Harriers) and former champion Morag Millar (Central AC) who took bronze.

A strong performance from Edinburgh AC earned them the team title, with Edinburgh Uni taking silver and Shettleston Harriers bronze.
