Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has hinted at a testy relationship with France manager Didier Deschamps, revealing some of the tense discussions that have taken place this season.
Mbappé was named captain of his nation following the international retirement of Hugo Lloris after the 2022 World Cup. The 25-year-old with 86 trophies in his national team led France to the semi-finals of Euro 2024scoring just one penalty throughout the tournament while his performances were marred by a broken nose.
After completing his move to Real Madrid this summer, Mbappé’s commitment to France has been called into question. The prolific striker joined his country in September but has not returned to Deschamps’ squad since.
Amidst rumors of outside influence of Real Madrid, Mbappé was omitted from the French selection in October. His continued absence of the international team a month later it was a big shock.
For the first time since Deschamps’ surprise decision, Mbappe has addressed the issue in a wide-ranging interview with Channel+.
“My love for the French national team has not changed,” insisted Mbappé. “Yes, I miss it, because I haven’t been there for a long time.
“In September I asked the coach not to go. He had just arrived Madrid. I had had a super short vacation. The coach insisted that he come, it didn’t go very well. But it’s still the French team.
“After that, in October, I got injured. I wasn’t in those discussions, they were talking between staff. The coach told me it was better not to bring me.
“So it was November. But I can’t say. It’s the manager’s decision, I’m behind him. I respect his decision. He’s the boss. I wanted to go, but I can’t say why I didn’t they called. up.”
Deschamps has flatly refused to elaborate on Mbappé’s omission, but reports emerged last month that the former midfielder would “discuss” with his player whether he will stay. France captain ahead
The next international break will not be until March 2025, when France face Croatia in a double-legged UEFA Nations League quarter-final.
