Keyshawn Davis says he’s not sure if he’s going to fight again. He sounded confused for what he wanted to do with his career after missing weight for his 7th battle in Norfolk. He says fans should talk to the top rankings if they want to see him in the ring again.
Davis: Talk to promoter
“The businessman” is retired, he’s gone. If you want me back, go talk to my promoter. Talk to the high people, say, ‘We need the businessman back in the ring,’ Keyhawn Davis said social media. ‘At this point, I am damningly close to retired. Boxing at the moment, it’s slow now. You can say just as well that I have retired. ‘
Keyshawn’s statement: ‘I am damningly close to retired’ suggests that he is disillusioned with his career. He seems to have self-doubts to do whether he has the talent to beat the best at 140. This is the division he claims to have risen after he missed weight for his fight against Edwin de Los Santos on June 7.
If Davis moves to light welter weight, some fighters can expose him just as badly as Andy Cruz has done repeatedly in the amateurs. We are talking about Ernesto Mercado, Gary Antuanne Russell, Subriel Matias, Richardson Hitchins and Alberto Puello.
The businessman’s boxing out
“I’ve already bought a house. So, all I have to do is pay my mortgage. I don’t have to stress to get back into the ring. I don’t know when I come back. I don’t know if I’m going to 140 or 135, ‘says Keyshawn.
Even though top rank Keyhawn brings back, their matchmakers cannot continue to protect him forever. They built his record of 12-0 over poor opposition, which enabled him to risk his skin against fighters such as Andy Cruz, Abdullah Mason, Raymond Muratalla or Jadier Herrera. But they cannot continue to do what their next network they are moving to.
Some fans believe that the reason why ESPN cut ties with the best rank is that the matchmakers have compiled too many unilateral fights that did not have drama. They did too well to fit the top fighters in battles that were gimmes and not 50-50.
Keyshawn is a perfect example. None of his battles were those where there was any possibility that he had lost. He was always the favorite. It was not because he is the best fighter in the lightweight section.
If the top rank is forced to fit fighters like Keyshawn in 50-50 battles or those where he is the underdog at 140, in the next broadcasting latform they are moving, his career can sink because he is not unbeatable.
He looked just like that in the past because of the way he was linked. Bob Arum needs to get a clue and get different matchmakers who will match fighters like Keyshawn in zinc or swimming fights. They cannot protect him and the other fighters in the stable forever without burning bridges with the new broadcaster.
When it comes to getting the highest rank to pay him more money, it probably won’t work. The longer Keyshawn stays out of the ring, the less valuable he will be for his promoters. It’s not as if he had a wonderful career like the legends of the sport.
Keyshawn was sent with a smart match in his 135 pound WBO title. He doesn’t have to fight with anyone to get a title shot, and then fought the worst link under champions, Denys Berinchyk, to win his belt.
