Kabayel has interim status and is in position for a shot at Usyk, who remains undefeated at heavyweight after wins over top opponents in recent years. The discussion around a potential weakness often centered around attacks on the body.
His manager Spencer Brown said Kabayel’s style could present a different type of challenge compared to Usyk’s previous opponents. He pointed to sustained pressure and blows to the body as key factors.
“If he fights Usyk, it’s Usyk’s kryptonite,” Brown told iFL TV about his fighter, Kabayel.
“He works the body beautifully, he stays on top of you, he’s a pressure fighter.”
Usyk was largely untouchable at both cruiserweight and heavyweight, though there were moments that led to questions about body shots. He was dropped to the body by Artur Beterbiev during the 2012 Olympics, and later faced controversy over a low blow in his fight with Daniel Dubois.
Kabayel’s team believes the approach could lead to a competitive battle against heavyweight. Brown said the opportunity should come soon, especially with Kabayel in mandatory position.
“Once he fights this first fight, he either has to fight us or he has to give up that title.”
Usyk will face Rico Verhoeven on May 23, with future opponents still to be discussed. Kabayel was not included in a recent list of potential opponents, despite his position.
The situation focuses on whether Usyk will face his mandatory challenger next or follow a different direction.
