Juventus are looking for their third successive win to open the Champions League stage against Stuttgart in Turin on Tuesday night.
Thiago Motta’s Juve have been defined by their period defensive resilience at the start of the new manager’s tenure, producing an impressively controlled display at the weekend to beat ten-man Lazio 1-0 in Serie A.
Motta’s side have remarkably conceded just once in eight league games this season, with much of the chaos Juve reaching the Champions League. After overcoming PSV on matchday one, the Italians overcame plenty of adversity to defeat RB Leipzig 3-2 away from home last time out.
Stuttgart have not been as productive at the start of the new season, and their defensive frailties reared their head at the weekend when they were beaten 4-0 by Bayern Munich. Sebastian Hoeness’ team is in tenth place Bundesliga having drawn three of their seven games, and currently sit 25th in the league stage standings after picking up just one point from a possible six.

Michele Di Gregorio serves his one-match ban on Tuesday night after seeing red in Juve’s dramatic matchday two win at RB Leipzig. However, the hosts have a capable deputy in Mattia Perin ready to step in between the posts.
Gleison Bremer tore his ACL before the break and is out for the season, so Pierre Kalulu should play most of his minutes at center back moving forward. Andrea Cambiaso could start this Tuesday as a right back.

Motta’s Juventus squad is currently looking a bit thin due to a number of injuries, and there is no doubt that this team has the gears to make it to the final third. Their football has so far been efficient and attritional, but the stability that Motta has provided has been very impressive.
The hosts are not capable of blowing teams out of the water, but they will exploit the empty gaps in Stuttgart’s defensive structure. Bundesliga the sides tend to struggle in transition, and the visitors will commit forward bodies in possession, as well as their press, in an attempt to overwhelm their Italian hosts.
