‘Just shows’: Carragher surprised by what he has seen Liverpool’s ‘brilliant’ secondary star do at West Ham

Jamie Carragher was in awe of Cody Gakpo after his two-goal display to help Liverpool thrash West Ham United 5-1 in the EFL Cup.

Despite going 1-0 down to a Jarell Quansah own goal, the Reds rallied against the Hammers with a brace from Diogo Jota and a goal from Mohamed Salah in the 74th minute to give them a 3- 1.

But Arne Slot’s men weren’t done there and with the pressure piling on after Edson Alvarez’s red card, Cody Gakpo scored twice in three minutes to really punish West Ham.

Carragher stunned by Liverpool star Gakpo

Gakpo’s first effort was a piledriver from the edge of the box after receiving the ball from a nice clearance from Darwin Nunez.

Despite playing the full 90 minutes on Wednesday, Carragher was keen to point out Gakpo’s ‘back-up’ role recently, with his performance against West Ham brilliantly demonstrating Liverpool’s depth.

“That’s Liverpool’s secondary left-back,” Carragher told Sky Sports (via BBC Sport).

“It just shows you the quality they have in store at the moment.

“The pace of the shot beats the goalkeeper at the near post, it touches him lightly.”

Moments later, Gakpo put the icing on the cake with his second in three minutes, using his strength to tease Muhammed Kudus before curling another shot past Lukasz Fabianski, assisted by a deflection off Jean-Clair Todibo.

“This is shaping up to be a really painful night for West Ham,” observed Carragher.

“Gakpo shows his class again, brilliant turn, he left two players for dead and then you know when he’s on that left side and cuts right foot, he’s going to let fly.

“There is a deflection, it takes him away from the goalkeeper.

“Well done Gakpo, great.”
