Journeyman or Giant Killer? Tyrrell Anthony Herndon wants to reverse expectations and upset Deontay Wilder’s Comeback plans

Veteran Tyrrell Anthony Herndon says he will “display” his skills to defeat former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder on June 27 in their fight in the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas.

The San Antonio, Texas native Herndon (24-5, 14 COs), has been by some people a ‘bum’ or ‘travel man’, since the announcement that he would be the opponent of Wilder (43-4-1, 42 COs), in what many people see as a last chance for the struggle for the ‘Bronze Bomber’.

This is the last chance salon for 39-year-old Deontay, who in his last five fights with a record of 1-4 in battle and needs a victory to keep the pile alive for him to be used as opponent for Anthony Joshua or one of the other popular heavyweights.

Wilder carried his welcome for the Riyadh season meetings after losing against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang. He is unlikely to be invited without turning his career. Unfortunately for ‘The Bronze Bomber’, it will cost a lot more than beating the non-gripping herndom to climb back.

Herndon admits that he thought that a ‘travel man’ was someone who came from the UK and traveled abroad to fight in the US rather than a reliable, but not outstanding fighter. With five defeats, Hernandez (37) is not exceptional, especially if you look at some of the guys he lost to.

The real problem is that Herndon has never beaten a significant opposition during his ten -year professional career. All his victories have come to obscure fighters who have never heard hard box fans. So you can argue that its true record coming in the wilder battle 0-5 instead of 24-5 because he is unproven.

When Herndon did act against significant fighters, in 2021 he was in two rounds by Richard Torrez Jr. Platened, disqualified in three rounds by Brandon Glanton in 2018 and knocked out in one round in 2017 by Efe Ajaga.
