Jorge Lorenzo says former MotoGP rival Marc Marquez is now a more ‘complete’ rider than he used to be.
Lorenzo In the year By the time Marquez arrived at MotoGP in 2013, he was the reigning world champion.
Lorenzo is one of only two riders to win fully fit. Marquez In MotoGP, he won his third and final title in 2015. The other, George Martin, was riding an advanced Ducati motorcycle.
Marquez and Lorenzo became teammates in 2019But it wasn’t the ‘dream team’ it promised to be on paper. The latter, who suffered a serious injury midway through the season, never felt comfortable on the Honda bike.
Jorge Lorenzo says Marc Marquez is more ‘accurate’ than before.
Talking to Cosimo Curatola reapingLorenzo described Marquez’s form during pre-season testing as ‘terrible’. It was his first time back on a MotoGP bike since an injury at the Indonesian GP last October, but he set the pace on the first day.
Marquez was superior. Later in the test, but after such a long turn off is still satisfied with its form. Lorenzo Ducati said they are in terrible shape When they want to extend their dominance.
Looking at Marquez in general, Lorenzo noticed that he was more ‘accurate’ and more intelligent on the motorcycle. The ‘explosive’ but dangerous style of yesteryear is no more.
“It’s scary, it’s scary because after the injury, on a circuit that’s one of the picks and on the first day, at the end of the day, he’s first,” Lorenzo said.
“Ducati is very scary, because we are seeing Di Giannantonio going very fast, so the combination is very scary.
“Sure, like you said, Mark isn’t the crazy explosive rider who just throws himself into a corner and takes his turn.
Now he is right, he is never wrong, so he has learned from everyone and everything. He is an excellent rider.
Where would Marc Marquez rank for accidents in 2025?
Marquez crashed 14 times in 18 weekends last year, down from 24 at Gresini last season. This places him in the middle of the pack (12th).
The timing of those crashes is also important. Only Yamaha’s Alex Rins (one) recorded fewer DNAs (among full-time riders) than Marquez’s three last season.
The Spaniard crashed while leading the US GP and the Misano Sprint, but those were his only high-profile mistakes. This is arguably a sign of maturity.
Now, with victory out of Marquez’s reach, it’s more tactical than ditching the bike and risking a healthy points haul.
