Jordan Pickford has admitted the decision on who will manage England permanently after Gareth Southgate is out of his hands, but hopes his side can bounce back from defeat to Greece.
England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley was immediately thrust into the interim position following the announcement that Southgate would step down after falling at the final hurdle of Euro 2024. His promotion saw him lead the Three Lions during successful matches in September, recording victories over the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
Carsley is back for another international break, which started on a slightly sour note. He was in charge when England were beaten 2-1 by Greece on Thursday and will also be in the dugout for their clash with Finland on Sunday.
While Carsley has made it clear that he hopes to return to the youth team after three camps with England, the question remains as to who will have the job permanently.
“I’m not the hierarchy,” England said Pickford he said after the disappointing loss. “It’s never nice for a player or staff to win at Wembley.
“We want to win every game we play when we put this shirt on and we didn’t. So we have to go on, dust ourselves off. What can we do better, what can we learn from and move on and get the result on Sunday.
“You always have to learn. You’re never going to be perfect, even when you’re winning games. You can learn a lot from that. It’s about recovering well and getting ready for Sunday.”
England have just three games left with Carsley in charge, the first of which will come against Finland at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki.
