John Fury says Tyson Fury can’t beat Usyk in trilogy

Usyk has already beaten Fury twice in 2024, handing the British heavyweight the only losses of his professional career. Despite talk of a possible trilogy, John Fury believes the outcome will not change.

Speaking to Playbook Boxing, he pointed to what he sees as physical decline and time away from the ring.

“He’s 38, he hasn’t been in the ring for 18 months, and people are filling his head with nonsense. Nothing’s going to change. Tyson is getting weaker and Usyk is getting stronger.

‘All I ever told him was this: if I was in his corner and he got into trouble, he wouldn’t die. But if he gets into trouble with them in his corner, he could die or suffer brain damage for life. Because when your legs are gone, you need someone to save you.

‘They won’t do it. They will not throw in the towel. They won’t pull him out. Their egos are bigger than Tyson, bigger than the fight itself. And that’s how people get seriously hurt in this game. You’ve seen it before – one shot, bang, and it’s over. It can happen just like that. It’s a dangerous sport.”

John Fury also revealed that his relationship with his son had broken down ahead of Tyson Fury’s return against Arslanbek Makhmudov in April.

“My relationship with Tyson was destroyed. Boxing completely destroyed it … I think he’s past his prime. I’m kind of a guy with no filter – I say it like I see it. I love him, but there are too many people patting him on the back and telling him things that aren’t true, building him up like he’s invincible. He’s not and he hasn’t been for a long time.

‘Tyson has been gone since the Deontay Wilder fights, they finished him. Wilder totally did him. He doesn’t have a leg under him. He took a lot away from Tyson. Makhmudov is a problem for Tyson. I’m the first one to say it.

“Listen, I understand now that Tyson is testing himself. But, I can tell you now, his legs are no longer there. I understand the only way he will believe it and see it is when the first bell rings.”

Fury is scheduled to return against Makhmudov at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 11, his first fight since December 2024.

A third fight comes down to legs and stamina. If Fury can’t stick, hold the center and fire combinations, Usyk’s work rate and cleaner shots will take over the rounds.

For now, any trilogy remains uncertain, but John Fury’s view is clear on how it would play out.
