Jermall Charlo raised to #2 on the WBA’s ranking on Super Middlerek after defeating travel man Thomas Lamanna with a sixth round technical knockout last Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Super middleweight weakness
The 168 pound division is so weak that Charlo is moved to #2, a reasonable thing to do. It is not as if there is a great talent in the weight class that deserves to be higher. #1 is Bekemir Melikuziev. The new WBA -Tussentage champion is Armando Resendiz, which upset the Caleb plant last Saturday night.

Charlo looked impressive against Lamanna (39-6-1, 18 COs) and dropped him in rounds 3, 4 and 5 before the competition was stopped by the Ringside Doctor one second in the round 6. Jermall didn’t look so bad because he was out of the ring for two years. He has been able to show elite level throughout, and a stitch that is probably the best in the section. Charlo’s timing was off, and he seems to carry a little extra weight.
Jermall vs. Punch statistics
- Charlo: 67 of 210 strokes for 31.9% connection rate
- Lamanna: 19 of 150 strokes for 12.7%
When the fight was stopped in round six, Jermall was 60-52, 60-52 and 60-52.
Whoever emerges as the winner of the Canelo Alvarez against Terence Crawford match might be interested in fighting Jermall, because he is now the most striking fighter to the defeat of the plant.
Jermall and Plant planned to fight next, but it is doubtful whether they will do it now. Plant was beaten by a 12-round decision last Saturday night. In the end, the decision to PBC will be.
Charlo can always fight against Resendiz for his WBA-Tuss-interest title, and use the belt to position itself for a world title shot against the Canelo-Crawford winner. However, he probably does not have to take the risk. It would be a dangerous battle for 35-year-old Jermall to take. It is useless for him to tackle the 26-year-old Resendiz if he doesn’t need it.
Charlo’s great battle prospects
Charlo’s name recognition is more than enough. In addition, Canelo is allegedly reluctant to fight Mexicans. So it excludes that Resendiz shot a title against him if he still holds the undisputed championship after his fight against Crawford on September 13.
Some fans complain on social media about the World Boxing Association that Jermall (34-0, 23 COs) was so high after one fight in the 168 pound division after a two-year discharge. They feel that Charlo, 35, had to fight more than once at 168 before connecting to the #2 place on the WBA’s rankings.
With Jermall’s recent history of repeated long 2-year disruptions, it is no sense that he has received another high ranking. However, if Charlo disappears again, he will be moved to a year or two.
