Team India coach Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 remains uncertain as he continues to recover from an injury. Jasprit Bumrah is expected to be included in India’s provisional squad, but his availability will depend on medical clearance and his ability to bat pain-free.
Bumrah picked up a back strain during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Sydney. He left the field and was taken to the hospital for examination. The pacer failed to bat in the second innings. BCCI’s medical team is yet to give an official statement on the severity of his injury.

According to Hindustan Times, Jasprit Bumrah has consulted New Zealand orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rowan Schouten, who previously operated on his back in 2023. The surgeon is expected to contact BCCI’s medical team and voters will be informed.
“The surgeon is in contact with the BCCI medical team and voters are expected to be informed,” the statement said.
Jasprit Bumrah named in Provisional Squad for Champions
The report added that Jasprit Bumrah will miss most of the white-ball series against England, which begins on January 22 with five T20Is and three ODIs. The decision comes to manage his workload ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy as the selectors prefer him to recover from a back injury.
His participation in the event remains uncertain as his participation is subject to medical clearance. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is expected to include him in the provisional squad to be presented by January 12 as per ICC rules, but his final inclusion will depend on his fitness.

Hindustan Times added: “Although Bumrah has been named in the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, which has to be presented by January 12 as per ICC rule, his participation will be subject to medical clearance.”
Veteran opener Rohit Sharma, who helped India end their ICC trophy drought during the 2024 T20 World Cup, is expected to lead the team with Bumrah as vice-captain despite injury concerns.
Voters’ attention to Mohammad Shami’s International Return
Mohammad Shami is expected to return to the Indian team for the ODI series against England in 2024 after recovering from a heel surgery. He had missed most of the previous year due to an injury sustained in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Shami returned to competition in October and selectors are eager to gauge his fitness in the Vijay Hazare Trophy knockout matches where he represents Bengal. If Shami impresses the selectors, he could be included in the ODI series against England and considered for the Champions Trophy.
