The Ethiopian clocked 2:16:52 to win the women’s race as Tsegaye Getachew won the men’s in 2:05:38.
In 2:16:52, Yalemzerf Yehualaw took half a minute off Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana’s women’s course record to win the TCS Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday (October 20).
The men’s race was also won by Ethiopia, with Tsegaye Getachev taking his second victory in 2:05:38 in Amsterdam.
Yehualav pulled away from his rivals at the Amstel River, running alongside racer Björn Koreman. For a long time, the Ethiopian was a minute and a half ahead of the record pace of the previous course (2:17:20 by Ayana). Buoyed by her final pace, she headed through the Vondelpark towards the iconic Olympic Stadium and finished strongly to become the fastest woman on the course as she also ran a PB by half a minute.
Haven Hailu, also from Ethiopia, finished second in a personal best of 2:19:2. Winfrida Mosetti finished third with 2:20:27.
Jehualau said: “I’m so happy to have achieved a personal best and set a record in Amsterdam. I struggled in the last 3km, but that’s part of the marathon.”

A large lead group formed early in the men’s race and after a solid first half the pace picked up considerably after 32km.
After passing 38 km through Vondelpark, three athletes remained in the fight for victory. The course record of 2:03:39, set by Tamirat Tola in 2021, was out of reach and now only one thing mattered: winning this Platinum label marathon.
Getachu looked to be the frontrunner with the fastest time and previous win in 2022. However, just before the stadium, he almost took a wrong turn.
He recovered quickly, but the 27-year-old marathoner was the first to enter the Olympic Stadium. With his arms raised, he crossed the finish line with a time of 2:05:38.
