Salvador reported that sources have informed ESPN that Jaime Munguia is one of the fighters being considered for the event. The card is scheduled for May 23 at the Pyramids of Giza, where Usyk will defend his WBC heavyweight title against Verhoeven in an event promoted under the “Glory in Giza” banner.
The mention of Munguia suggests his next fight is now being discussed after his most recent outing, a decision victory over Bruno Surace in their rematch last May in Riyadh. Munguia was stopped by Surace five months earlier in their first meeting, a setback that came after his decision loss to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in their May 2024 super middleweight title fight.
One possible opponent was also discussed. Rodriguez reported that a fight against José Armando Reséndiz, the WBA super middleweight champion, was being considered for Munguia’s return, although the bout has not been finalized and is still under discussion.
Munguia continues to train with Eddy Reynoso, who also works with Canelo Alvarez. The partnership kept Munguia within the same training camp even after the two fighters shared the ring in 2024.
Rodriguez also indicated that Munguia could appear later this year on a proposed event built around Mexican fighters facing international opponents, a card expected to be headlined by Canelo.
For now, Munguia’s next opponent has not been confirmed. The discussions surrounding the Usyk event suggest that his return to a major international stage could take place if he is added to the May 23 series in Egypt.
If Munguia appears on that card, it would put his next fight on the undercard of Usyk’s heavyweight title defense against Verhoeven at the Pyramids of Giza.
So the report from Rodriguez points to the possibility that Munguia’s next fight could come as part of the same event built around Usyk’s latest championship defense.
