Jack Nicklaus has spent the last 66 years coming to Augusta National. The six -time master champion knows all the insects and results of the famous course and has been for many years.

But that was not always the case. When Nicklaus arrived at Augusta National as an amateur in 1959, he was not prepared in any of the rules of the course – and he accidentally broke one without even realizing it.

“When I first went down to Magnolia Lane in 1959, I will never forget it, I left with my college friend called Bob Obetz,” Nicklaus on Siriusxm PGA Tour said. “I didn’t know you couldn’t bring guests, no one asked. Never asked me. I am a 19-year-old child and I remember Alex Osborn, a member here, met us at the club. Alex never said a word you can’t bring (a guest). Alex simply says: ‘Oh, hi, I say. Bob this week. And we played for about three, four days and he never said a word.

Nicklaus shot 76-74 and lost the cut from a blow to his daughters in 1959. He played two other masters as an amateur before playing in 42 as a professional.

After losing cutting in Augusta in 1959, Nicklaus lost only one cut in Masters between 1960 and 1994. He withdrew from the 1983 masters due to a back issue. The great champion 18 times played in his last masters in 2005 and now serves as one of the beginners of honor along with Gary Player and Tom Watson.

Now 85, Nicklaus gets the first Tee in Augusta on Thursday just hoping that he can get the masters at a proper start.

“You may want to start when I walk up, make sure I don’t travel,” Nicklaus said on Thursday after the 89th masters started. “The second is to make sure I take finger on the ground without falling up, and the third is just not killing anyone. Don’t laugh at it; this is actually the thoughts I have. In fact, from that point, I just get up and try to make a short pace as I can do, and I don’t need to work on it, and just do not hurt anyone.
