One of New Zealand’s most composed and technically gifted players, Williamson has led New Zealand to two T20 World Cup Semi-Finals (2016 and 2022) and 85 runs in the 2021 T20 World Cup final. In his retirement statement, Williamson said the decision came after careful consideration and that it was the “right time” for both himself and the team.
“It’s something I’ve loved being a part of for so long and I’m so grateful for the memories and experiences” Williamson said. “It’s the right time for myself and the team. It gives the team clarity for the series moving forward with their next major focus being the T20 World Cup.
“There is so much T20 talent out there and it will be important to get these guys cricket and prepare them for the world cup.
“This team cares so deeply” he added. “Blackcaps is a special place and you want to give yourself and give the best of yourself. It’s a journey and an exploration and that’s what I love about this environment.”

Williamson’s focus is on Test and ODI cricket
Bidding farewell to the shortest format, Williamson confirmed that he fully remembers the format that continues to be New Zealand’s cornerstone and ODI cricket.
