‘It won’t make much of a difference’ – Ruben Amorim sent strong warning ahead of Man Utd appointment

Ally McCoist has sent potential new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim a strong warning about what he is accepting.

Amorim has quickly become the favorite to take over from Erik ten Hag after the The dismissal of the Dutchman on Monday.

The 39-year-old took over what should be his last Sporting CP game on Tuesday, which led them to a 3-1 victory over Nacional in the Taca da Liga.

Amorim will leave Sporting after leading the club to two Primeira Liga titles in four years, ending a drought dating back to 2002, as well as two Taca da Ligas and a Portuguese Super Cup.

Although he was a huge success in Lisbon, Amorim will be taking charge of a completely different animal at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have suffered a drastic and prolonged slump in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, with fleeting moments of success amid miserable Premier League performances.

This season, United have won just four of their 13 games in all competitions, while in the Premier League they sit equidistant from the Champions League places and the relegation zone (7 points) with just eight goals scored in nine games

Last campaign saw United slump to eighth in the table and could only see Aston Villa join Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool in the top four, while Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle also finished above them.

According to McCoist, it is getting to the point where United’s performances are preventing potential new players from joining them, instead opting to join rival clubs, including Aston Villa.

“They lack success. Champions League: The Champions League is the best competition on the planet in terms of football, it’s what we all want to see, it’s what the best players want to play and the best coaches want manage. Manchester United is a bit far from that,” McCoist said (via Birmingham live).

The former Scotland international continued: “So it’s common sense that the best players (don’t want to play for them). If the best players have a choice these days, go to Arsenal. I’ll even bring Villa into the equation, Liverpool and (Manchester) City will obviously go there because financially it won’t make much of a difference to them, missing out on Manchester United.

“Back in the day when Manchester United would probably be offering more money, winning more football games and playing at one of the biggest clubs in the world, right? All three have now gone.

“That’s why, if someone has the option of going to a club, they have to weigh it up. Financially there won’t be much difference.”
