“There is no explanation. You know, it’s the last,” Montfils said. “They’ll spend two years in Toronto, so much won’t be able to play it. Of course I think the other is too old for me, so I think it was the last time I play here.
“So you know. I really thought about the end, and I was like, well. I think it’s, unfortunately, but the last time I think I would play here.”
Monfils opened the 2025 season winning his 13th career title in Auckland and continued to reach the 16th round in Australian Open. Since then, he has posted a record 9-11 with opening outings in four of his last five events.
A semifinalist twice at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Canada, Monfils arrived at Toronto’s quarterfinals two years ago pushing Jannik Sinner into three groups. The end of his opening Sunday marked the end of an era.
“In Toronto, I think I played a semifinal here, I had a great year here, great jogging,” Montfils said. “I remember a great match against Milo, some other great matches here. Two years ago I played a quarter -final with Jannik, it was a fairly high level. But it was too far away.
“I remember I think I played Radek Stepanek, it was quite fun. I mean, I had a fun match in Toronto since I played here. So it’s something, but at the end of the day, you know, it’s natural and normal.”
