
If you have paid attention to social media hypes, you are probably aware of the “water risk” cocktail-a shock of vodka, gatars, lemonade and sprite-who gained immediate fame in Tiktok during the summer. Water risk is similar to a TRANSFUSEDwhich has grown greatly to popularity with players. A classic transfusion includes vodka, ginger ale, grape juice and lime juice. But the players are drawn to her because Gatorade (and its electrolytes) is thought to be a more careful choice – and even healthy – of the mixer. Is it? I asked Amy Stephens, a licensed New York -based dietitian, specializing in sports food, to get it.
“When you drink alcohol, dehydrate you and also lose electrolytes,” Stephen said. “Gatorade is actually an interesting opportunity to replenish some of the electrolytes losing your body, and I like this idea. And then carbohydrates from lemonades and gatars are also great.”
Why are electrolytes – and their possible lack – such a great job? Stephen provided a quick explanatory.
“When you sweat, your body loses not only water or sweating through your skin, you are also losing electrolytes,” she said. “And those four main electrolytes are sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. And the one you lose the more we need to pay close attention is sodium. The more you sweat, the more you lose. All are different. It is based on genetics, fitness, health conditions. Some people can simply sweat.
“Electrolytes are important because they help your muscles fire, they help with mental concentration and clarity,” it continued. “They also help you keep your blood volume and blood pressure. So if you lose a lot of electrolyte, it can remove blood pressure.”
Electrolyte recharge is an essential key to maintaining peak performance in the course. So is the risk of water – dare to say – a healthy Choice?
“I wouldn’t call it healthy,” Stephen said. “But I think, with Gatorade. I like that twist for it because it helps to replenish some of those electrolytes losing your body.”
Stephen emphasized that there are other ways to recharge electrolytes if this is your final goal. You can try water additives like Liquid IV OR In tabletswhich give you a scent plus the benefits of recharging electrolyte without calories and sugar.
But if a cocktail – or some – is in the bank for your round golf, water risk is a strong choice for recharge.
