Carl Frampton believes Josh Taylor will choose not to fight again after losing at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, against Ekow Essuman in an upset unanimous loss of 12 round. It was the third consecutive defeat of Taylor, and it was a fight that was expected to win. The scores were 116-112, 116-113 and 115-113.
Essuman (22-1, 8 COs) is far from an elite or even an A-level fighter, but he was too well conditioned for 34-year-old Taylor (19-3, 12 COs). The loss of this level of a fighter was a bitter pill for former undisputed lights of welterweight champion Taylor to swallow. He looked depressed when the scores were announced because he knew what the results meant for his career.
Frampton doubts Taylor’s return
“I don’t think so. This man was the elite of the elite, and he was a superstar. Obviously he’s not the warrior he once was, ‘Carl Frampton said Dazn box When asked if Josh Taylor would ever fight again after his loss of Ekow Essuman Saturday night in Glasgow.
The problem is not just that Taylor lost a lot from his game. It is more of a case that he was never initially overestimated. If you look at his best wins, he did not beat excellent fighters from 2017 to 2022. Taylor’s best wins were against these fighters during that five -year period:
– Jack Catterall
– King of prograp
– Jose Ramirez
– Ivan Baranchyk
– Viktor Postol
– Miguel Vazquez
“It depends on what his dreams and ambitions are. I think it was becoming a two -weight world champion. But on a performance like that, I don’t think it’s possible. ‘
Taylor’s only chance of becoming a two-weight world champion is if he gets a title shot against the winner of the collision between WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios and Manny Pacquiao. Josh’s loss of Essuman does not appear to happen. For Taylor to get a title shot, he has to come back and beat someone well.
Taylor’s engine runs empty
“He had it for the first few rounds, and that’s it,” the commentator Ade Oladipo said that Taylor looks good in the first two or three rounds against Ekow, and then quickly disappears. “He looked sharp, he looked really good. That Southpaw departed landed, and then the engine seemed to be very, very fast, ‘said Ade about Josh.
In Taylor’s fighting in the past, he did not show problems with his endurance. However, he has been out of the ring for a year since his loss of Jack Catterall in May 2024, and he only fought four times since 2021. If he was inactive over a long period of time, he may have gone out in Taylor. This is his fault. If Josh had remained active and fought three times since 2021, he probably wouldn’t have had this problem.
“It was like a 2-liter engine at a 1.6,” said Darren Barker, talking about Essuman who has more energy than the tired Taylor. “It was an engine that started to fade. It was a good start for Taylor.”
The strange thing is that Essuman looked slowly, as if he did not spend any energy at the pace he fought with. However, he just attacked Taylor quietly and occasionally landed big shots, and it carried him. Taylor did not like to be hit by the heavy shots of Essuman.
“He was in a good groove with a real fire, and the kind of will to win we are used to seeing from Taylor. But as the fight progressed, this man (essuman) would not have said completely overwhelmed, but surpassed Taylor. Three or four shots for each of Taylor’s, ‘says Barker.
Ekow landed the heavier shots and landed a dot on his body when Taylor fought in a nearby area and tried to hold on.
