The new one PuttAIM putter training aid it has conflicted me.
On the one hand, it’s a great tool for practicing placement indoors. For outreach and targeting calls, it’s outstanding. I find myself using it all the time when I’m practicing on my home practice green.
On the other hand, what PuttAIM does is quite narrow and is on the expensive end of the training tool spectrum.
Like I said, what he does, he does really well. But does it do enough that you should buy one?
What is PuttAIM?
The main element of the PuttAIM trainer is an extremely bright green laser. The beam appears as a solid green line rather than a single point like a laser pointer.
The laser unit rests on a raised arm, the base of which is the same diameter as a golf hole.
This means you can either aim the laser at an actual golf hole or just putt by putt at the base of the PuttAIM unit.
The laser and its rechargeable battery turn on with the click of a button and can be adjusted so that the beam is perfectly aligned with the target.
So far the battery life has outlasted the duration of my practice sessions and I tend to practice setting for a long period of time.
The unit disassembles and fits into a nice carrying case if you want to take your PuttAIM with you for practice elsewhere.
PuttAIM brings laser precision to your putting practice
Truth be told, PuttAIM only brings the laser. You have to bring the accuracy. That said, your putting accuracy should improve if you use PuttAIM to adjust your shot aiming and alignment.
As I mentioned, the PuttAIM generates a very bright green laser beam along your target line. This line should help you with your aiming practice.
The PuttAIM works like a chalk line without the need for cleanup or a raised string line where the string never gets in the way.
It works even better than a chalk line or string, as you can easily track the ball’s progress along the laser beam. Lasers do not depend on or need to be reapplied in the field.
Why a green ray?
You might think that green is not the best contrasting color for grass. The brightness of the PuttAIM makes up for some of the lack of contrast, but a different color would really be more noticeable.
After all, it’s about physics. Green is the highest energy color that will not harm the ground. PuttAIM could have improved the contrast by using a blue or violet laser, but those wavelengths have too much energy and would cook the grass.
The orange and yellow beams will show up quite well, but I believe the orange and yellow emitting diodes are expensive.
Red lasers are very common, but not as bright as green. Even with improved contrast in grass, red would not be as visible.

What else does PuttAIM do? This is where things get more controversial. PuttAIM does an amazing job of setting up a green for the putt, but that’s really all it does.
Furthermore, it really only works indoors. I took the PuttAIM to the practice green on an overcast day and the green was barely visible.
If you’re heading into the dark, the beam is great, but watch out for nocturnal critters.
I’m not sure every golfer will find $150 of value in PuttAIM. Like I said, I’m using it all the time in my green garage where it’s perfect.
If you own a shop that sells machinery, PuttAIM can be super useful. I saw a PuttAIM on LAB Golf’s giant indoor green last summer. In that environment, it would be amazing for pass-through devices.
Works on any surface
I use my PuttAIM on a TourLinks practice green in my garage, but you can hit it anywhere you can see the range.
You can work on Stimp’s low-key practice on your living room mat and then prepare for the maddening speed of Augusta by laying hardwood or tile.

If you travel, PuttAIM will give you a much better practice session than a glass of rocks sitting on your hotel room floor. Just check with TSA before packing it in your luggage.
Are there other laser options?
One of the reasons I like PuttAIM so much is that I’ve used a laser for garage practice for many years. My wife bought a Black+Decker laser level to hang paintings at an art show. After the show, I confiscated the laser for exercise.
It is similar to I found this laser joystick on Amazon.
I love the bubble levels on the frame laser. That way I know the beam is level. However, the Black+Decker laser has a red beam that is much dimmer than the PuttAIM’s green beam.
The intensity of the beam is why the PuttAIM is more expensive.
Is PuttAIM right for you?
That’s a question only you can answer. Hands down, the PuttAIM grip and stand are better than the laser level I had previously used. You’ll have to decide if you want to spend an extra hundred bucks for the brighter green beam.
I really enjoy using PuttAIM in my garage putting sessions. At this point, its price probably goes to about 10 cents per minute of usage. Over time, my usage will justify the expense of the unit more.
If you will only occasionally use a laser during practice, there are other less expensive PuttAIM options available. The PuttAIM Mini version costs less than $100, but does not come with a cup-shaped stand.
The PuttAIM’s rechargeable battery and excellent beam resulted in my Black+Decker laser landing on the Island of Misfit Golf Tools. Compared to that old laser, the PuttAIM is a better putting tool in every category except price. If you have the means, it’s an obvious choice.
