Taking to social media today, Errol Spence said: “We work,” as he stands next to his fighter, Frank Martin.
Spence, 34, has not fought since being knocked out in the ninth round by Terence Crawford in their welterweight undisputed championship match 15 months ago on July 29, 2023.
Errol turns 35 on March 3 and he can’t afford to stay out of the ring much longer without ruining his chances of reviving his career. Financially, Spence can retire with the money he made from his fight against Crawford.
If Spence stays out of the ring much longer, he should retire because if he tries to return without taking a tune-up, he will be beaten again. Spence says he doesn’t believe in taking warm-up fights, which is why he got knocked out by Crawford and made the Nebraska native look better than he is.
It would be a shame if Spence doesn’t return to the ring to challenge WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in 2025. This is the fighter that Spence has been mentioned as possibly facing next.
The ambition that Spence once had has disappeared since his high-speed car crash on October 10, 2019 in Dallas, Texas. Spence has only fought three times since then and has looked poor in each of those fights.
Spence’s battles since car accident
– Terence Crawford
– Yordenis Ugas
– Danny Garcia
If Spence defeats Fundora, he could face WBA champion Crawford in a rematch to try and avenge his loss. Some believe Spence’s loss was because he was drained of weight for the fight and was coming off a 15-month layoff. It was foolish for Spence to take the fight against Crawford without a tuneup and a catchweight.
It’s unknown if former 147-lb unified champion Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) is hinting that he’s “working” toward a long-awaited return or if he’s going after lightweight contender Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) refer.
“Say, man, we’re working,” Errol Spence said on social media.
In a competitive fight, Frank Martin was knocked out by WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis in the eighth round on June 15. At the time of the stoppage, Tank was ahead with scores of 67-66, 67-66 and 67-66. Martin could still have won if he hadn’t been caught with a big shot and knocked out.
Martin’s chances of winning a world title at lightweight are slim because the division is filled at the top with fighters who have more talent than him, and he is aging. He turns 30 on January 12th, and it might as well be 40 because he’s so far behind the competition in the weight class.
Spence might be able to maneuver Martin into some nice paydays, but he can’t defeat the top fighters in the lightweight division. He struggled badly against Artem Harutyunyan, and had to rally to win a close 12-round unanimous decision. Martin’s career now seems to be about money fights, but without him having any chance to capture a title. It’s just a rush at this point.
