Sebastian Furdora says his next title defense of his WBC and WBO junior middleweight belts “must” be against Errol Spence. Fans have mixed feelings about the 6’5 1/2″ Fundora, who is battling the burned-out Spence as he hasn’t performed well since his October 10, 2019 car accident.
Was Spence Washed?
Errol has fought just three times in the past four years since 2020, and he has been out of the ring since suffering a ninth-round knockout against Terence Crawford on July 30, 2023. In that fight, Spence looked like a broken shell of the fighter. he was years earlier.
Spence’s activity since 2020
– Terence Crawford: TKO 9 loss
– Yordenis Ugas: UD 12 win
– Danny Garcia: UD 12 wins
His reflexes, speed and strength were gone. He took a beating from Crawford, who was made to look better than he actually was by how physically exhausted Spence appeared. During the interview the fight, you could see that Spence was not right. He sounded like he had a mouth full of marbles and was speaking in slow motion.
Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) and former unified welterweight champion Spence (28-1, 21 KOs) have been mentioned as next fights since Sebastian’s win over WBO 154-lb champion Tim Tszyu on March 30 earlier this year.
Spence entered the ring at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas immediately following Fundora’s 12-round split decision against Tszyu, making it clear they would fight next.
“It should be next. I think it’s going to be a good fight with a lot of action. He throws a lot of punches. I throw a lot of punches,” Sebastian Fundora told BoxNation about him and Errol Spence fighting next. “He is an up and coming fighter. I consider myself that way too. It will be good for the Mexican fans in America.”
Fundora’s event
Unsurprisingly, Fundora, 26, is excited to fight Spence because his chances of winning would be high. Fans would much prefer to see Fundora take on someone more convincing, like IBF 154-lb champion Bakhram Murtazaliev next rather than Spence. At least that fight would be more sporting.
Fundora is considered a vulnerable paper champion who will only hang on to his title as long as he is closely matched. His title reign will end if he fights someone of the caliber of Murtazaliev, Vergil Ortiz Jr, Serhii Bohachuk or Israil Madrimov.
Fundora should fight a rematch against Brian Mendoza to avenge his seventh round knockout loss on April 8, 2023. That was just a year ago, and he hasn’t done anything to go back in the direction of fighting Mendoza.
