Irfan Pathan points to a major concern for KKR
Ex-India all-rounder Irfan Pathan He has raised significant concerns about KKR’s squad, highlighting what he believes could be a persistent weakness in IPL 2026. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Pathan noted that the franchise has not adequately addressed its spin bowling struggles, especially in the middle innings.
According to Pathan, KKR’s problems started after the departure of key players Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Ranacapable of stabilizing shots and controlling spin effectively. He emphasized that the current middle order lacks batsmen who can spin the strike and attack spinners with confidence.
“The real problem for Kolkata that I think they didn’t address properly in the auction was: playing good spin. With Shreyas Iyer gone, Nitish Rana gone, they didn’t get middle-order players in the auction who could handle the spin. That was actually the biggest problem and we saw the results last year,” Pathan said.
He elaborated further Ajinkya Rahanenoted that while the veteran thrived at the top of the order, his effectiveness declined in the middle innings, especially when batting with spin, where his strike rate dropped significantly. He also appreciated the Pathan roles Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singhsuggesting both players are more comfortable against pace rather than spin. This creates a tactical gap, especially on slower pitches where spinners dominate the proceedings.
“Ajinkya Rahane is very good when he’s batting at the top. But when he’s in the middle, there’s a problem. His strike-to-spin ratio drops significantly, almost to 100. So can you say Rinku Singh bowls good spin or fast? He’s a good fast bowler. Ramandeep can also play well against spin towards that end. It’s definitely going to be an advantage, actually, the problem Kolkata have to solve, I think, is that year will remain. Pathan added.

Can KKR realistically win their fourth IPL title?
