Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra did not hold back in his assessment, “As a dough, it is not allowed to do this. He can’t check the ball. If the shape of the ball is the problem, it’s about hitting it for sixes.” he said.
Adding a touch of humor to this point, former South African Dale Steyn noted: “It seems everyone wanted to be a bowler.”
What does the rule book say?
From a rules perspective, David’s actions could potentially fall under Article 2.10.7 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with players’ time wasting. Under the laws laid down by the MCC, the batsman may check the ball for a short period of time but is not authorized to hold it or delay play while doing so.
While no official action has yet been taken, the match referee can still review the incident. If necessary, David could face fines or formal reprimands for his actions. For now, the situation is under observation.
