Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) suffered another bitter defeat IPL 2026but this time the spotlight wasn’t just on the result – it was on a controversial refereeing decision that angered players and fans alike. After their last ball loss Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) At the Eden Gardens, KKR all-rounder Rovman Powell was outspoken in his criticism of what he described as. “wrong” from the judges on the field.
The controversial call creates frustration in the KKR camp
The incident happened early in KKR’s innings and quickly became the talking point of the match. An opener Find Allen The young pacer mistimed Prince Yadav’s delivery and sent the ball towards the boundary. Digvesh Rathi, a spinner at deep third man, completed a dive that looked impressive first. However, replays indicated that his leg may have brushed the pad of the string at the moment of contact – something that would invalidate the catch under the laws of cricket.
Despite the doubts, the judges on the field Adrian Holdstock and Akshay Thotre chose not to consult with a third judge and affirmed the dismissal. This decision did not go down well with the KKR dressing room. Speaking after the match, Powell made his disappointment clear.
“Definitely (more angles should have been looked at). We talked about it when he came on. We’ve seen umpires in the IPL step up for lesser things and things that aren’t as close.” Powell said, clearly disappointed.
“Maybe it was their mistake” he added.
While Powell refrained from placing all the blame for the loss on the officials, he questioned the consistency of officiating standards this season. For a team already struggling to find momentum, moments like this only deepen the sense of frustration.
Rovman Powell blames pitching for KKR’s poor showing in IPL 2026
Despite early failure, KKR managed to post a competitive total of 181/4but the match was not decisive. Lucknow Super Giants were on the back foot for most of the chase, slipping to 128/7 after 16 overs. At that stage, KKR looked firmly in control and on course for their first win of the season.
However, cricket often thrives on unpredictability. Young batsman Mukul Choudhary turned the game around with a fearless counter-attack. Playing one of the most impressive knocks of the season, he smashed 54 off just 27 deliveries, studded with seven powerful sixes and two boundaries. His late blitz stunned the Eden Gardens crowd and took LSG over the line in the last ball to secure a dramatic three-wicket victory.

Aside from the controversial call, Powell also pointed to the nature of the pitch as a factor. Traditionally known for its batting-friendly surfaces, Eden Gardens has not quite lived up to that reputation this season.
“It’s not a classic Eden Gardens wicket where you just go and swing around the strike and blast. It wasn’t a 220 wicket; there was a bit for the bowlers, especially when they were using the slower balls,” Powell said.
“It’s very disappointing. You want to make Eden Gardens your castle, it’s your home, you’ve got the fans behind you,” he added.
The defeat leaves KKR in dire straits, sitting near the bottom of the table with just one point from four matches – the only relief so far being a solitary one. However, despite the mounting pressure, Powell had an upbeat note about the road ahead.
“If you look at history, IPL winners are picked in the middle and back of the tournament. It’s not easy when you don’t start well, but our destiny is still in our own hands. We still have 10 games to go.” he said.
With a crucial clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 14, KKR will be desperate to finally open their account. Whether they can put this heartbreak behind them and turn their season around remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure – the pressure only increases with each passing game.
