IPL 2026: Kavya Maran’s SRH replaces veteran England pacer Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards

A few days ago IPL 2026 start, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) moved swiftly to plug the sudden gap in their squad. Owner-led franchise with injuries disrupting plans Kavya Maransigned the experienced English pacer David Payne as a replacement for the Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards.

The timing of this action is very important. SRH are set to open their campaign against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 28 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium. With so little time left to prepare, management wanted an experienced choice who could step in and deliver right away.

Why was Jack Edwards ruled out of IPL 2026?

The setback came in the form of an injury to Jack Edwards, who was bought by SRH for INR 3 crore in the auction. The 25-year-old all-rounder has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2026 season due to the leg injury he picked up while playing for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield earlier this month.

This is a particularly unfortunate moment for Edwards, who is just beginning to make his mark on the international scene. He made his T20I debut for Australia against Pakistan in January 2026 and followed it up with an impressive Big Bash League (BB:) season where he took 19 wickets in 13 matches for the Sydney Sixers, finishing as one of the top performers.

In his place comes experienced left-arm seamer David Payne, who brings both experience and consistency. Signed for INR 1.5 crore, Payne may not have had an extensive international career – he played just one ODI for England – but his T20 record is hard to ignore.

In 233 T20 matches, Payne claimed 304 wickets at an average of 21.16, maintaining a save rate of 8.03. Known for his ability to strike early on the power play, he also has a smarter slower ball that makes him effective in the early to mid-innings. For a team like SRH, which mainly relies on disciplined bowling, Payne’s skill set can be extremely valuable.

What makes this signing even more exciting is his recent form. Payne was the top wicket-taker in the 2024 Vitality Blast, taking 33 wickets and helping Gloucestershire lift the title. He then continued his success in franchise cricket by winning the ILT20 with Desert Vipers in January 2026. A few weeks later, he produced a match-winning performance in the Big Bash League final, taking 3 for 18 for the Perth Scorchers, winning the Player of the Final award.

Leadership changes and initial challenges for SRH

While Payne’s arrival has boosted the bowling unit, SRH still face many challenges at the start of their campaign. One of the biggest concerns is the absence of captain Pat Cummins, who is recovering from a back strain and is expected to miss the first few matches.

A keeper-batterer in his absence Ishan Kishan was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the sideAppointed vice-captain with Abhishek Sharma. This is a landmark moment for Kishan, who will make his IPL captaincy debut.

Kishan comes into the role with confidence, having recently led Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title and playing a vital role in India’s T20 World Cup victory. His aggressive style of play and fearless approach can inject fresh energy into the SRH set-up.

Despite the early setbacks, SRH still have a balanced bowling attack. Along with Payne, experienced Indian pacers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel will play key roles supported by young local talent. The combination of experience and youth gives the team flexibility in the early stages of the tournament.

As the season begins, all eyes will be on how quickly SRH can adapt to these changes. While losing key players is never ideal, adding a proven performer like Payne could be a smart and timely move. If the team manages to find the rhythm early, they still have every chance to start IPL 2026 on a strong note.
