The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season has barely begun, but he has already delivered his first major controversy. Follows Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) a six-wicket defeat Mumbai Indians (MI) At the Wankhede Stadium, a sharp remark by captain Ajinkya Rahane sparked a wider debate – forcing Cricket Australia (CA) to clarify.
At the center of the storm is KKR’s high-profile INR 25.20 crore signing Cameron Green, who did not bat once despite MI’s dominant chase of 220.
Ajinkya Rahane’s statement sparks debate as KKR feels the heat
KKR looked to be in control after posting a commanding 220/4, but the scenario changed dramatically as Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton tore apart the bowling attack, stringing together a 148-run opening stand in just over 11 overs.
With key pacers unavailable and Greenden not contributing with the ball, KKR’s options looked slim. Naturally, questions arose during the postgame presentation.
Asked about Green’s absence with the ball, Rahane was quick to give an eye-catching reply: “You have to ask Cricket Australia that question.”
He further added: “Hopefully Green will start playing soon and the combination will be a little different. We batted really well, but it’s really important to find that balance with the ball.”
The voice suggested frustration and hinted that KKR may not have full control over Green’s role. Without a sixth bowling option, Rahane had limited agility as MI cruised to victory.
KKR’s bowling figures told the story – none of the bowlers could stem the flow of runs and even experienced names like Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy struggled to make an impact.
Cricket Australia clarifies injury status and timeline
With speculations mounting, CA quickly issued a statement to clear the air. According to the board, Green is currently dealing with a lower back injury and is making a carefully controlled return to bowling.
“Cameron’s lower back injury is being treated but will require him to be sidelined for a short period of time. Cameron is currently in India recovering from his bowling loads with a view to returning in 10-12 days. KKR have been contacted and are fully aware of this information,” the statement said.

The message was clear – KKR were not caught off guard. The franchise had prior knowledge of Green’s limitations before the tournament began.
This injury is not new. The 26-year-old all-rounder has a history of back problems and even underwent surgery in late 2024. Since then, CA has been cautious, limiting his bowling workload to ensure long-term fitness.
Green is expected to resume bowling in around 10-12 days, meaning he could miss a few early matches as a bowling option. For now, he will continue to play purely as a batsman.
The situation also reflects a broader trend. Several Australian players incl Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are being carefully managed due to injuries and workload concerns. CA seems firm in prioritizing player training over franchise requirements.
For KKR, the problem is immediate. Green was expected to provide balance as an all-rounder, but his temporary inability to earn a spot leaves a glaring void in the squad.
However, there is a silver lining. Green looked comfortable with the bat, 10 off 18 balls at No. 3. His presence still adds firepower to the batting unit and after he resumed bowling, KKR were finally able to unlock the balance they had invested in.
Until then, Rahane and his team will have to come up with quick solutions as IPL 2026 gathers pace.
