2026 edition Indian Premier League (IPL) It has already delivered high-octane drama on the pitch, but the latest is being made by the headlines Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding off-field discipline. As the tournament enters a crucial middle stage, the governing body has increased its focus on match-day operations with a view to streamlining the spectacle and minimizing unnecessary chaos around the pitch. Characterized by rising points and tight finishes, this season now faces a new layer of administrative rigour.
BCCI implements updated fielding guidelines for non-playing squads in IPL 2026
To standardize the match environment and protect commercial interests, the BTSO introduced the “Power of 16” rule. According to this directive, only 16 players whose official name is on the team sheet are allowed to cross the boundary line during the shoot-out. It marks a significant change from previous seasons, when any member of the franchise’s 25-man squad has been seen sprinting onto the field with hydration or tactical advice. Now, day-to-day duties like carrying drinks, bats or gloves are strictly reserved for the five designated substitutes on this 16-man roster.
Outside the field of play, the BCCI has implemented a ‘density limit’ for the perimeter. No more than five players wearing aprons can be placed near the boundary rope at any time, whether or not they are part of the active 16. Any other crew members are required to remain in the shelter. Most importantly, movement in the “gray zone” between the boundary line and the LED billboards is now prohibited for seated players. This is mainly to ensure that sight lines remain clear for broadcast cameras and that high-value sponsorship boards are not obscured by “randomly stretched” athletes.
These updates strengthen existing regulations, particularly clause 11.5.2 (governing the delivery of performance drinks) and clause 24.1.4 (mandating the use of life jackets). By tightening these protocols, the BCCI aims to prevent wastage of time and maintain a professional aesthetic befitting the league’s global status.
