This day in the field of athletics – October 30
1976–Cal. Northridge State’s Julie Brown, competing in a race that served as a qualifier for the AIAW X-Country Championships (a precursor to the NCAA Championships), ran 16:14.0 over the 5,000 meters on her home track, breaking Ian Merrill’s 6-month mark. American record: 16:16.2. Brown went on to win the AIAW XC title two weeks later.
