In what has been a banner season in his new career, Ben Griffin has already set up his first PGA Tour trophy. But he did not make it up for himself.
Griffin’s progress victory came at the end of last month in the form of the Zurich Classic team of New Orleans, where he and his partner, Andrew Novak, Edged Nicolai and Rasmus Hoygard with a stroke.
Now, Griffin has a chance in another title. This time, however, he is his.

The third time this year that Griffin has kept the lead of 54 holes in an individual game event. In the previous two cases, he failed to make money. But he will enter the last round of Sunday in Fort Worth with another mentality.
“I’m a PGA Tour winner now, so it helps,” Griffin said. “I’m going very safe tomorrow.”

Griffin will be paired again with his third round partner, Matti Schmid, who also fired a Saturday 68 to maintain his part of the superiority.
Like Griffin, Schmid of German origin has not yet acquired an individual event in PGA Tour. But he has seen success in other circles. A former submission at Louisville University, Schmid won European amateur titles and was a low amateur in the 2021 open championship at Royal St. George’s. On 14 starts this season, he has scored three ends of Top-10, experience he hopes to attract Sunday.
“I had some narrow calls to the European tournament, I would say. And I also put some nice rounds this year as well,” Schmid said. “So hope I can only put one another there tomorrow, and I hope that’s enough.”

Given the gap he and his co-leader have opened, Griffin said Sunday is being set like the match.
“Looks like Matti and Matti will duel it tomorrow based on how the driver’s table is,” Griffin said. “So yes, the pedal will fall down.”
