Improve your speed on slant shots with this top instructor drill

You must have felt the disappointment of reading a layup perfectly only to lose because your pace was low. Whether you’re chronically poking out your lips because of your hammer hands or your birdie opportunities just don’t stop, speed control is a skill you can train just like everything else in golf. And this two-tee drill from Cameron McCormick, a Top 100 GOLF instructor, can help.

To set up McCormick’s putting drill, find a relatively fair putt on a slope. Place the two tips about an inch apart in the middle of the rim of the cup, as McCormick shows in the video below.

Drop in the downhill shot

When practicing downhill putts, make sure the tees are on the side closest to you. Then, place a ball five feet away and hit it. Your goal for downhill shots is for your ball to make its final revolution as it hits the hole.

This may be different than what you are used to, as some players feel that hitting a downhill slider hard takes away the break and increases the chances of making the putt. We all know the saying, “Any putt is fair if you hit it hard enough.”

But according to McCormick, this strategy actually reduces the effective size of the hole, lowers your chances of making the putt and leaves you long on the way back. Instead, he says to think drip. If you did it right, your ball will balance on the two peaks you placed.

Ride the uphill shot

On uphill shots, the tips should be on the far side of the cup. Again, place a ball five feet away and hit it. This time, your objective is to get the ball to the back of the cup. For uphill shots, McCormick says to think CAR. You’ll know you’ve nailed it when your ball hits the two peaks on the back of the cup.

As you become comfortable with this drill and can consistently complete uphill and downhill targets, gradually move the ball back. Maybe a few feet at first, then a few more as you improve, and before you know it, you’ll be able to nail these tricky shots on the course.
