Well, I did. I tried another “cheap” gauge. If you remember my last piece on Tour Edge HP-Series #6you’ll know that, for $100, I think it’s a great shooter. This time, I stuck with the Tour Edge and gave it a try Exotics Wingman 801 Slant Putter. I’ll keep things short: it’s $70 more than that HP-Series #6but it is much better and worth every dollar of the upgrade.
We’ve entered a strange new reality where a new counter costs you $350 or more. This is ridiculous. You definitely don’t need to spend that much to get a good shooter.
What struck me immediately before taking a putt was the increase in overall quality compared to HP-Series #6. The headgear alone feels like a different class of product. It’s thicker, better constructed, and looks and feels like it should come with a much more expensive gauge.
The same can be said about the head. Alignment lines are a great visual aid, especially if you’re like me, a fan of alignment golf balls. Additionally, the overall shape of the hammer will look very familiar to anyone who has ever enjoyed or used a TaylorMade Spider. I’m not calling it a clone but the comparison is inevitable. Another area that I think elevates this over it HP-Series #6 is the only one. If you recall, I really didn’t like the sole of the HP-Series #6 and thought it looked, for lack of a better term, cheap. with Wingmanthis couldn’t be further from the truth. The reflective blue trim is unique and, in my opinion, really cool.
Then there is the face. Tour Edge’s W milling (yes, “Wingman“Freze) looks great to me. Without an insert, the face feels soft and the response is extremely strong. With every shot, I knew exactly where to hit it. Distance control has been great for me, especially on longer shots. That said, the lack of an insert means this won’t be for everyone. If you need that extra cup, if you don’t need more. traditional, responsive strike, the Wingman absolutely delivers.
I have played it with one round Golf Pride Reverse Taper Gripwhich I’m really enjoying because it really helps keep my hands calmer when hitting.
At $170, this is an incredible meter. It doesn’t feel or look “cheap” and it more than stacks up to the big name OEMs. Full stop. Once again, this is your reminder: you don’t need to spend $350 or more to get a really good shooter. of Tour Edge Exotics Wingman 801 Slant Putter proves it.
