I really wanted to like these shoes

There are a lot of cool gadgets in the world of golf equipment that don’t always fit wellThe most requested testsORBUyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it works. In our We Tried it series, we put the equipment to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

What we tried:

Municipal ATG Sportcross Shoes. Designed for both the trail and the golf course.

Who tried it:

Connor. Director of Content and resident sneakerhead. My wife doesn’t know I’ve been saving extra shoes at work. She seems to think I’m over my problem. No! The only thing I’ve outgrown is my closet. Can a man come in here?

What’s the big deal?

of The Sportcross ATG is the first golf shoe from the brand founded by Wahlberg. With a name like MUNICIPALITY, it was only a matter of time.

Speaking of communes, the Sportcross ATG leans more towards fashion and fun than style and traditional. And that’s okay! I love the way this shoe looks. The shape, the thickness… you name it this pair is made for the weekend warrior like me.

Appearance is one thing. Performance is another. If the Sportcross ATG wants any chance of making my rotation, it better be a good golf shoe, not just a good one looking for golf shoes.

Performance pitfalls

I really wanted to love this shoe. I love the laces with suede details and reflective laces. The build and quality are top notch. There is no doubt about that. But the rest of the shoe left me wanting more.

It was oh, so close. But I just didn’t quite nail it.

Let’s start with the pillow. MUNICIPAL’s M.FLOAT high foam pile is comfortable, at first. Not a problem at all for a few hours of walking. But there just isn’t enough give or rebound to provide enough impact protection. The translation? Pain in the lower back.

Not a bad walking shoe. Just not a perfect one, either.

The traction was also weak. This was to be expected once I saw the less than solid model. The rubber here is very soft and, for those in the know, clear tires tend to be less durable. So I would expect this pair to wear out quicker.

Just not ideal.

The rest of the shoe, including fit, waterproofing and durability were good. No complaints from me at all.

Try again

I would like to see MUNICIPALITY go back to the drawing board and try again. You can tell they’re looking for that special recipe, but haven’t hit the right balance of ingredients yet. When they do, I’ll be looking forward to adding another sweet looking golf shoe to my closet.
