ESSEX LEAGUE, One Tree Hill, September 25
England U20 1500m bronze medalist Jacob Hurrell added to his Essex title from last January by winning the league.
For the women, it was Grace Burrell’s top spot in her first British race since returning from college in the US. However, before that the Chelmsford runner had a number of age group wins in this league until 2019.
In the age group race, boys and girls of each age group ran together, with Maddison Kindler of the Brentwood Beagles second fastest under 13s.

SURREY MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS, Nonsuch Park, Ewell, October 25
Former Surrey champion Phil Weeks led all the young runners to win the M40 circuit title, but the team race was slightly under-numbered in his age group, in contrast to the older age groups where there were significantly more entries.
Chris Blackburn retained his M50 title, leading all the young M45s along the way, while Terry Booth led his Guildford & Godal ming club to the M55 team title from the front.
Over the shorter distance, David Ogden dominated the M65 race to help his south London club to an easy team victory.
In the women’s race, Emily Weeks, another former Surrey senior champion, made it a family double, once again leading all the young W35 entrants to take the W40 title.
It was a similar story in the W45 team race, where W50s Mary James and Nikki Sturzaker led their younger W45 sisters.

RON HILL MANCHESTER RELAYS, Wythenshawe Park, October 25
After an absence of 19 years, the Manchester University Relays returned to Wythenshawe Park and a total of 219 teams completed three races, Chris Paul reports.
Most of the men’s fastest laps came in the first 3km, and there were four or five teams still locked in as the first race headed back to the changeover point.
At the line, Arlo Ludevik, who had been flirting with the lead, took the win, moving from third to first in the final 30 meters. Trafford’s Finnish prophet Archie Patterson held off the line with Leeds University’s Harry Hewitt just over a second in fourth.

After a fireworks first leg, it was a case of back-to-back legs between Leeds Beckett, Leeds University and Sheffield University, with Beckett’s Abdimalid Darwood cruising to a comfortable win over Leeds, who lost touch in the fifth leg.
Sam Greenstein made a valiant effort to close Sheffield’s wafer-thin five-second lead over Birmingham at the start of the last leg to move up to third, but Kay Davies rallied to take the place for Yorkshire’s one-two-three.
In the women’s race, the University of Birmingham dominated the early stages with the top three teams trailing and two in the top three for most of the distance. Manchester Metropolitan would also be strong in the race, but allocated their strongest runners, Lucy Armitage and Ty Brockley-Langford, to the mixed race because of its importance as Varsity districts.
Manchester University President Beth Ansell was the fastest finisher by some margin, displacing former Manchester University runners (third place).
In the mixed race, team managers allowed their three male and three female legs as they wished, the detailed placement becoming clear only in the closing stages. This year was no exception, with York’s Cam Davies edging the University of Birmingham by less than 10 seconds for the win.
