There’s a blanket of snow covering most of the country, and if you’re anything like me, you’re going a little crazy. I haven’t played outdoor golf in a while, but once the snow melts and the courses open up, I know where I’m going – temperatures be damned.
Winter golf it’s not my favorite kind of golf, but it’s better than no golf. Living in New York City, we are fortunate to have a few days each winter that are “warm” enough to play outside. After this stretch was tucked in, I kept my eyes on the weather report for the next opportunity to get out and play. As long as the mercury is above freezing, I’m in.
If you’re like me and you’re itching for a winter round, here are five tips to get the most out of your cold weather round.
5 tips for winter golf
1. Layer it
It can be tempting to wear a big (and warm!) coat, but it will limit your swing. Instead, opt for a series of insulating layers. Hoodies and vests are great for keeping you warm without getting in the way of your swing.
2. Shake it
A simple way to stay warm during the winter is walking. It will keep you loose between shots and keep you from freezing from the cold wind caused by zooming around in a stroller.
3. Pack a hat
Make sure you have a nice knit hat in your golf bag. You’ll be surprised how much warmer you stay when you ditch the ball cap for a bean bag.
4. Keep your paws warm
Your hands are your only connection to the club — so keeping them warm is essential! Grab some hand warmers for your pockets and keep your fingers toasty in there between shots. This will make all the difference in those sensitive shots around the green.
5. Enjoy it ahead
The ball won’t go as far in the cold, so don’t be afraid to stick it in a box (or two!). Also, don’t forget to take an extra club on most shots.
