Technique is even more critical for shots within 100 yards as it should be generate a stable trajectory to check distances.
A good drill I use with some of my top players is to take three balls and hit them from a variety of yards. Start at 20 yards, then go back five yards until you get to 50. Just draw your distance control and see how far the ball is holding from each spot.
